La percepción de la práctica deportiva ha experimentado transformaciones profundas en las últimas décadas. La figura casi mítica del “deportista de hierro”, promovida por los medios en los años 80, representaba a un atleta invencible, ajeno al desgaste emocional. El deportista cargaba con un sufrimiento doble: por un lado, el peso de fallar a quienes confiaban en él y, por otro, la vergüenza íntima de sentirse débil en un entorno que exige fortaleza absoluta. Esa presión, arraigada en la antigua cultura deportiva, dificultaba pedir ayuda.

Hoy, la imagen del deportista se ha humanizado: se reconocen su vulnerabilidad y la importancia de su bienestar mental. En el ajedrez, por ejemplo, la figura del psicólogo deportivo se ha vuelto común y a nadie le sorprende que los jugadores, grandes talentos sometidos a mucha presión, cuiden de su estado emocional con la ayuda de profesionales.

The decisive stage of the VI El Llobregat Open Chess Tournament will be a storm of nerves and determination

The final stretch of the VI El Llobregat Open Chess Tournament has begun, with the favourites sharpening their knives. The gaps between them are minimal, and those who best control their nerves will take home the generous prizes up for grabs.

The perception of sports has undergone profound changes in recent decades. The almost mythical figure of the “iron athlete”, promoted by the media in the 1980s, represented an invincible athlete, immune to emotional exhaustion. The athlete bore a double burden: on the one hand, the weight of failing those who trusted him and, on the other, the intimate shame of feeling weak in an environment that demands absolute strength. That pressure, rooted in the old sporting culture, made it difficult to ask for help.

Today, the image of the athlete has been humanised: their vulnerability and the importance of their mental wellbeing are recognised. In chess, for example, the figure of the sports psychologist has become commonplace, and no one is surprised that players, who are highly talented individuals under a lot of pressure, take care of their emotional state with the help of professionals.

The pressure on the players is very high, and knowing how to manage nerves at the VI El Llobregat Open Chess Tournament becomes as crucial a skill as prior theoretical preparation. As the tournament progresses and the battle for the top spots intensifies, the pressure seeps into every detail: any inaccuracy can cost the game.

The traditional ringing of the bell to start the round of play was performed by the very young Roman Shogdziev, the youngest international master of all time, who achieved the title at the age of 10.

In sporting terms, the great Indian masters Bharath and Pranesh won their games, meaning they will face each other on the top board in the next round.
